Join us for a very special edition of Two Bit Movie Club as we celebrate one of history’s best comedies by watching it and the movie that it is almost scene-for-scene parodying. Both films we’ll be watching follow traumatised Air Force pilot Ted Stryker as he attempts to land a commercial airplane that lost its pilots due to food poisoning, but one of them is funny on purpose. Dense with jokes that are as delightfully clever as they are breathtakingly stupid, Airplane! (released as Flying High in Australia) is the high watermark of the genre parody movie. A lot of these jokes are in scenes that are almost word-for-word lifted from Zero Hour, something which would have been apparent to maybe some of the audiencegoers in 1980 but is completely inscrutable to the modern viewer – until now. Join us as we watch the very nearly the same movie back-to-back on the big screen.
